Road To Independence

Being that this is the weekend when we Americans celebrate our independence, I thought it appropriately to stick with that theme. There were plenty of radical blogs I could have chosen from, but Mike Patton’s Road to Independence seemed a much better choice.

Road To Independence - Why You Should Go

Patton’s Road to Independence blog is in some ways a dual-purpose blog. It started as a chronicle of his journey to independence when he chose to become an independent investment advisor. Much of the blog is specifically about that experience. To that end, there is lots to be learned here about building a business successfully and making it your own; you can learn from both Mike’s successes and hurdles.

The other purpose is in delivering investment news and advice. The independent investor will find much of interest in the way of commentary and investment news as well.

Summing Up Road To Independence

Mike Patton’s blog is both informational and inspirational. There is much to be gleaned from Mike’s experience as you build your own Road to more independent living.

The Salt Of Life

A Dash Of Salty

Some men just seem to know what’s important in life—and Jeffrey Weeks, in my book, is one of them. His blog is evidence of that.

A Dash Of Salty - Why You Should Go

A Dash of Salty is Jeffrey’s blog about everything that matters to him—family, food, and fun seems a fitting summary. Jeffrey blogs from the shores of North Carolina in the States, where he talks about his saltwater fishing adventures, his home, family, garden, movies, and entertainment. Along the way he treats us to delicious recipes (primarily for his seafood fare) and tempting pictures—not just of the food, but of just about everything that is going on in his life and on the blog.

Jeffrey’s version of the blog’s summary:

“Posts on saltwater fishing, popular entertainment, sports, gardening, the world at large, and the family at hand.”

Summing Up A Dash Of Salty

Jeffrey Weeks seems to have struck a most harmonious balance in life. His blog is entertaining, interesting, and in many ways relaxing, as there is something quite comforting about knowing that there are people out there who just simply “get it”—life, that is.

It’s all gone to the dogs, which of course is a cliché we just couldn’t pass up for this review—but one that is more than fitting, too. The DoggyLogic blog is really all for and about man’s (or in this case woman’s) best friend and maximizing life with them.

DoggyLogic - Why You Should Go

DoggyLogic is the blog work of Julie, a devoted dog-lover and proud owner of a pair of border collies from champion breeding lines. Through her ownership, experiences, and general love of her dogs, Julie has become quite well-versed in dog care and logic. She now brings this to her DoggyLogic site and blog, a place where you can learn about all things dog.

The blog includes very serious and necessary topics about dog care, breeding, and more, but also takes plenty of time for the lighter side of enjoying life with your dog, also including a Doggy Fun and Celebrity Dog Spot. In addition, there is plenty of advice about choosing your dog and breed, puppy care, getting started and still more, more, more!  If it’s about a dog and you can’t find it through her, chances are you didn’t really need to know.

Summing Up DoggyLogic

Do You Know What Day It Is?

Day Of X

As blog author Mark Hewitt will tell you, every day is a day to celebrate…something. The latest craze to make every day stand for something has not gone unnoticed by Mark, and just to help you sort it all out, he’s created this blog.

Day Of X - Why You Should Go

Day of X is a tongue-in-cheek walk through the year chronicling the latest and greatest international day of recognition. Each day, Mark highlights the designated celebration for the day (or A designated celebration—I’m sure many of these enjoy more than one!). He gives you a run-down on what the day is and a bit of history or trivia as accompaniment, as well as advice on how best to honor the day.

Why would anyone go to all this trouble for you? Mark explains his motivation on his About page.

“There are few faster-growing cultural phenomena than that of dedicating every single segment of the calendar to some cause, group or idea. And I feel that, as citizens of the world, it’s essential that we honour every single one of these important milestones.

The problem is, there is no single, central resource which will tell you which of these vitally important Days you are currently living in. What if you found out, at one minute to midnight, that you’ve been wearing shorts throughout the International Day of Trousers, having mistakenly thought it was an ordinary Thursday? How could you look yourself in the eye after that fiasco, knowing that everyone in the world has been laughing at you all day?

Day of X is here to help.

Every single day of the year, I’ll be keeping you up to date on what Day you’re currently living in, and providing helpful advice on how best to celebrate it. And if it’s one of those few, scarce and sad days that isn’t yet dedicated to some worthy idea? I’ll make one up.

You’re very welcome.”

Summing Up Day of X

“Day of X. Because every day should be special. And it’s not special until it’s recognised by some arbitrary action group.”

What would life be without arbitrary days of recognition and celebration? At the very least, less entertaining, because we wouldn’t have Mark Hewitt’s blog. Be sure to be in the know, and grab a few laughs in the process.

Go here to check out Day of X.

A Touch Of France

Country French Antiques

There is a bit of a decorator in pretty much every household. If that is you, it’s okay to admit it and sit back and explore this blog. If not you, but perhaps a significant other in the household, you’ll want to grab him or her for this one.

Country French Antiques - Why You Should Go

Country French Antiques is the blog of a French antiques dealer, Shawn Stucker. Shawn makes frequent buying trips to France to supply her Kentucky (USA) antiques shop, which is heavily influenced by the French style, furniture, and collectibles, but also includes European and American antiques and pieces of interest.

Whether or not you are close enough to shop Shawn’s physical shop, you will get a great value from her blog. In it, she showcases many of the pieces that she has for sale and also shares photos of others. She also discusses various pieces, what makes them special or valuable, and highlights ideas for their use in decorating. All in all, there is a lot to learn here about both decorating and antiques. At the very least, you’ll find her photos inspiring.

Summing Up Country French Antiques

This blog is so rich in photos, it’s almost a photoblog. It’s like eye candy for the antique lover—a decorating magazine, window shopping excursion, and vacation to the French countryside all rolled into one.

Of Bytes And Hertz

Bytes And Hertz

I’ve never really understood all that much about ‘Ham’ radio (amateur radio) or about the hobby and culture of it, but all that might change now thanks to this blog.

Bytes And Hertz - Why You Should Go

I think the concept of amateur radio always fascinated me, but I was never quite sure what one would say. Thanks to Nat Harrington and his blog, now I might have some idea.

Nat’s blog, Bytes and Hertz, is a blog all about amateur or ham radio. Nat has been an enthusiast for many years, and even has a professional background in TV broadcast—so yes, he knows his stuff. His blog covers all aspects of the hobby, including news and politics of note and debate, associations, uses, events, benefits, and the list goes on. It is an absolute definite for other amateur radio enthusiasts and a place of interest for those who’ve always wondered, like myself. If you are just thinking about getting in on the fun, this is a definite stop for you, too.

Summing Up Bytes And Hertz

There is no chance of boredom at this blog for the amateur radio hobbyist. With all the additional trivia, features, and gadgets, there’s really no chance of boredom for any visitor. If you love ham radio, or are just enticed by the idea, be sure to check out this blog.
