Paris Daily Photo

Continuing around the world in photos, we go from Maureen’s View Of England to Eric’s photo-tour of Paris, France. Eric’s Paris Daily Photo blog is his chance to help others enjoy the city, all the while proving that yes indeed there are friendly Parisians waiting to welcome you there (his simple self-description being: “Friendly Parisian (yes, it does exist!)”).

Paris Daily Photo – Why You Should Go

Much like Maureen, Eric strives to show his city through the eyes of a local, while showcasing the best it has to offer. Day by day, picture by picture, Eric takes us around to see the sites, from the world-famous to the littler-known nooks and crannies and spectacles.

Eric also aspires to a higher cause of building a friendly community where people can not only enjoy the sites, but also comment and share, make photo requests and share or ask questions about the city in the PDP forum. It’s a large effort with a large payoff in the form of a first-hand resource and welcoming community. There are great causes to support here and links to other world-wide photo blogs, making this an even more well-rounded resource.

Summing Up This Blog

Whether you are a local Parisian, a past visitor missing the sites and sounds of Paris, a future traveler or one who has ever been but wishes to live vicariously, you will enjoy Eric’s Paris Daily Photo blog. Stop by this friendly and informative community space to see the sites of Paris and share in the conversation.

Which Blog Networks Lead The Way?

One thing I’ve learned after a hundred forty + blog reviews is that many come from leading blog networks. Not all, of course, there are just as many that are privately hosted or hosted on WordPress or BlogSpot or another platform of choice. Nevertheless, it is helpful to know that there are some reliable places to look for new blogs to follow, and blog networks capable of delivering.

Who Do You Love?

Just as we all have our favorite blogs, many of us probably have favored blog networks, too. I know certain ones emerge time and again as I scour the internet for new blogs to review. I’ll be highlighting these blog networks from time to time and reviewing them alongside our Digg It blog reviews. As always, though, our readers have a voice, too, so please do tell—what is your favorite blog network? What network consistently delivers great blogs again and again? Which network do you feel is a reliable place to go whenever you feel the need to locate new blogs?

And please, also tell a bit about why you feel the way you do. What makes this network so great? Are they a niche site? Is it something about their management or purpose?

All comments and recommendations are deeply appreciated. The comments are open and waiting below.

A View From England

Maureen has made it all the way “From the “Land of 10,000 Lakes” to “England’s green and pleasant land.” That’s quite a lot of travelling and quite a transition for an American expatriate. For 21 years now Maureen has been carving out her life with her family in the beautiful green isles of England, and now shares that experience on her blog, A View From England.

A View From England – Why You Should Go

A View From England is largely a personal blog, with the added angle of being a chronicling of life relocated. Maureen shares the very interesting perspective of being one living a life abroad. That perspective gives her the advantage of seeing Americans and Brits through many different pairs of eyes. Sometimes she defends what she sees and sometimes she laments it, but the experience is one only few could or would share, but one from which so many could learn.

Aside from her life and perceptions, Maureen uses her blog to share her myriad interests, which she describes as “a hodgepodge about various topics as well as musings about life in England. I’m particularly interested in discussions about parenting, education, health, nature and the environment. I’m also very concerned about civil liberties…”

Summing Up A View From England

Maureen is just a regular gal sharing her life and times, but with the interesting twist her life has brought her. Visit Maureen for some chat and globe-trotting friendship.

Deciding The Personal Genome Question

The Personal Genome

Just like Dr. Hsien-Hsien Lei’s Eye on DNA blog, the Personal Genome is a blog with striking promise for the present and future. It is the place where Jason Bobe, blog developer and Director of Community for the Personal Genome Project out of Harvard’s George Church’s lab, brings attention to the issue and the promise it potentially delivers.

The Personal Genome – Why You Should Go

For people like Bobe, the Personal Genome Project is an exciting adventure with potentially great implications. For others of us, the project is a bit of a mystery, a mention on the morning news, and something we are not quite sure applies to or affects us. This is the perception that Jason Bobe is trying to change. He aims to clarify the gray matters and help people see that the project does touch each and every one of us, even as he helps us answer the questions like:

“…are you going to take the personal genomics plunge? How are you going to decide? What are the issues? How are other people making this decision? Who is doing interesting work relevant to these choices? By the way, what is relevant?”

These are the very questions Bobe and his blog addresses in the interest of furthering the project and people’s understanding of it.

Summing Up The Personal Genome

Jason Bobe clearly has his own ideas about the Genome Project, but does not presume to preach or pressure. He offers education and understanding, and a way to personalize what the project might mean to you, as he works to help you make the important decisions in regards to it.

Ideas For Women

At least superficially, it’s not hard to figure out what Trish’s Ideas for Women blog is about. The name pretty much sums it up. Ideas for Women is a blog which is actually part of a larger site of the same name, and all of dedicated to inspiring, educating, and motivating women to thought, action, and living well.

Ideas For Women – Why You Should Go

Trish has built her site and her blog over several years. She says she has a hard time remembering precisely what her original intention was, but likes the direction that her site and her blog have grown in. The blog, much like the site, discusses topics of interest to women, women’s issues, politics and the implications specifically for women, as well as issues like health and wellness. Her categories are a good indication of what you’ll find at the blog:

• Inspire
• Health
• Change
• Money
• Family
• Friday Favorites

Within the categories she strives to motivate women toward better health in all matters—money and finance, world change, physical health, psychological, and motivational.

Eye On DNA

Ever since the DNA code was unraveled the building block of life has been on the forefront of news and discoveries. It seems every day there is more to know and new applications and implications that stem from our new-found knowledge of DNA. It’s all very exciting, but also confusing for the average person.

Enter Dr. Hsien-Hsien Lei. Her blog, Eye on DNA, is dedicated to decoding this exciting field and walking you through just how all the applications—large and small—may come to bear on your life.

Eye On DNA – Why You Should Go

The subject is a passion of Dr. Lei, who is backed with all the credentials and credits to be a true authority on it. She brings this authority to her blog, where it has been married with another passion of hers—blogging and social media (you can read about her extensive social media credits on her About page, too). She describes her passions and her blog in this way:

“I’m passionate about social media and the potential it has to empower people to take charge of their personal health. The Internet and genome technology combined are going to change our lives in ways we can’t even begin to imagine. Medicine in the genome era will touch all of our lives and I’m here to document its progress.
DNA is our past, present, and future. We need to seize it, examine it, and know its power to make it work for us. How will it change your life?”

Summing Up Eye On DNA

DNA discoveries and knowledge will change your life in many ways, ways in which you’ve previously not even been aware. Learn more about the forms those changes may take, and learn how you can use them to take more control over your future and health, courtesy of Dr. Hsien-Hsien Lei.

An Arduous Journey Into Blogging

Where to Find Arduous Blog:
Blog URL: http://arduousblog.blogspot.com/
Category: Personal Blog

Arduous Blog

The name of the blog describes a lot; the writer says it’s in part a description given her by her father (all in love, of course), and is also representative of how a fourth grader feels about spelling the word. Naturally, it can also be taken as a description of life in general, which is what this blog is in essence—a description of life in general, that is.

Arduous Blog – Why You Should Go

Whether the life described is considered arduous or not probably depends largely on the day. It might be that this life was made a little more so when one day, this “20-something woman with a taste for high-end kitchen supplies she never used and a serious purse addiction…decided to quit buying anything new.” That must have proved a challenge indeed, but with at least 9 months experience behind her, I’d daresay she found a way to overcome the difficulty of the transition.

Summing Up Arduous Blog

Arduous’ blog is somewhat random, as life and personal blogs can be, but everything that is discussed is done with a touch of humor and more than a little thought and insight behind it; a visit to this blog just might job a little thoughtful consideration of your own.

Neatorama

Neatorama is another community blogging effort of sorts, but one that is quite difficult to define. Nevertheless, as the title promises it’s a place of quirky interest that benefits from the contributions of its authors.

Neatorama – Why You Should Go

Neatorama is largely a collection of interesting and random things of interest. Many are works or art, some are spoofs and humorous pictures and digital media, and others are little known news posts and scientific discoveries. The blog is a wealth of diversity and discovery. These are things that have piqued the interest of their contributors, and will pique your curiosity, too, with many things you’d never have otherwise known existed.

Summing Up Neatorama

Neatorama has a long history and is still going strong, so there is no fear of a lack of interesting things to find at this blog. Join the fun and intrigue, learn some interesting things about the world you didn’t know, and have a general good time with the authors of Neatorama.

One Man, No Impact

No Impact ManWhere to Find No Impact Man:
Blog URL: http://noimpactman.typepad.com/blog/
Category: Environment, Lifestyles

No Impact Man

In true Sustainable Dave fashion, No Impact Man is carving his own path of exemplification in the interest of compelling us all toward personal environmental and global responsibility. Colin Beavan’s No Impact Man blog is the journaling of that journey.

No Impact Man – Why You Should Go

So what is No Impact Man about? In a nutshell,

“A guilty liberal finally snaps, swears off plastic, goes organic, becomes a bicycle nut, turns off his power, composts his poop and, while living in New York City, generally turns into a tree-hugging lunatic who tries to save the polar bears and the rest of the planet from environmental catastrophe while dragging his baby daughter and Prada-wearing, four-seasons loving wife along for the ride.”

A description surely fit for a Hollywood screenplay (or a real-life documentary, based on a real-life book). All kidding aside, though, this is a serious blog about a serious subject and the way one man and his small family have set out to deal with it. Translation in more serious terms:

“No Impact Man is my experiment with researching, developing and adopting a way of life for me and my little family—one wife, one toddler, one dog—to live in the heart of New York City while causing no net environmental impact. To do this, we will decrease the things we do that hurt the earth—make trash, cause carbon dioxide emissions, for example—and increase the things we do that help the earth—clean up the banks of the Hudson River, give money to charity, rescue sea birds, say.

In mathematical terms, in case you are an engineer or just a geek who likes math, we are trying to achieve an equilibrium that looks something like this:

Negative Impact + Positive Impact = Zero.

No net impact. Get it?”

Summing Up No Impact Man

Like Dave and his peers, Colin Beavan is putting his money where his mouth is and actually doing something about the global environmental crisis facing us. Colin takes on the subject quite seriously (but not without humorous charm) to truly educate others to more sustainable living. See what No Impact Man is doing and learn some ways you can live more environmentally friendly, too.
