Recap Reviews, January 31 Edition

Not only does this week’s recap close out a week, it closes out an entire month–and an important month at that, being the first of the New Year.  Don’t worry, I’m not going to link back to the entire month’s worth of blog reviews, but I will link you out to our weekly review category so you can explore them yourself, all set up in four neat little packages.  And now, let’s take a look at what we dugg up (puns totally intended, jut for fun) this week at Do You Digg It.

Week In Review, January 31, 2009

  • Our first post of the week was not actually a review, it was a request for review suggestions.  We had readers wanting to know how to submit their favorite blogs, and so another blog submission post was in order.  Sean and I also figured it was time to make this official, so a submission page was added to the site so readers can always find out how to make a blog review request or suggestion.
  • The first actual review of the week was of Anthony’s What I See Out My Window blog, a unique community photoblog experience.  Don’t miss this global affair, a one-of-a-kind effort.  Maybe even head over and submit your own view!
  • Then it was on to Peter Aldin’s Freakedout Fathers blog, a unique experience all its own where Dads connect and support each other through the trials of children and family.  It’s a decidedly male perspective on parenting, but one that both men and women stand a lot to gain from.
  • Don’t let the next parenting blog’s pinkness throw you; Katy Lee’s Adventures in Parenting blog is a place for both Mothers and Fathers to share and learn from the trials and tribulations of a Mom with the benefit of experience four-times over.  Share the adventures and share the support with Katy.
  • FInally, we turned our attention to an issue all of us wish we had the luxury of ignoring, yet everyone is touched by; Marijke’s Cancer Commentary blog is supporting people touched by cancer in any way, while delivering the news from the field.

That concludes our week of posts, and now off to do some more digging.  Enjoy these blogs and be sure to check out last week’s recap review if you haven’t already and get the scoop on more great blogs!

Cancer Commentary

The hard, sad, truth is that there is probably not one of us out there who has not been affected in some way by cancer. Whether it is a personal experience or diagnosis or the diagnosis of a friend or family member, most of us are far too intimate with the topic. It’s an issue we don’t like to think about, but one that we are forced to deal with at some point down the line. Marijke at Cancer Commentary understands this, and gives us a resource that helps us make sense of it all.

Cancer Commentary – Why You Should Go

Given the many, many forms that cancer can take, and the many ways it can impact upon on our lives, there is a great need for meaningful information and discussion on the topic. That is what Cancer Commentary provides. It is a primarily an informational blog that seeks out and delivers news from all angles regarding cancer—research and development, treatment news, statistics, reports, and more. But the blog also speaks from the more human and compassionate side, discussing the issues and opening up a forum where those who are touched by the disease can come for help and support.

Summing Up Cancer Commentary

Cancer Commentary covers a great range of topics related to cancer. This is a place, as Marijke describes it, for “Caring about cancer – as a patient, a caregiver, a survivor, or an onlooker”; one that will help you cope, help you make sense of the information that is out there, and one that can help you understand the risks and preventative options available to you. For your own health and interest,

Making Parenting A Shared Adventure!

Adventures In Parenting

Adventures in Parenting comes to us from among the many great links on the blogroll of Freakedout Fathers. It is the parenting blog project of Katy Lee, a mother from Walnut, California, USA riding the roller coaster adventure that is parenting for more than 20 years now.

Adventures In Parenting – Why You Should Go

That’s more than 20 years of first-hand experience to share with her readers, both mothers and fathers from all around the world sharing the common goal of raising “good” kids—a challenge for sure, but one Katy Lee has risen to meet! A mother of four, both boys and girls, Katy Lee has gone through every stage of child-rearing and family life from infant to young adulthood. That’s a definite qualification for an author of a blog on parenting.

In explaining her blog, Katy Lee says,

“This site is here to talk about raising our kids to be people of compassion, integrity and character. Here you will find support for you through practical and simple advice on raising “good” kids with conservative values.
The Adventures of a parent are many – the good, the bad, and the ugly! Everything I write on this site are experiences I’ve gone through. Most of the ideas I share have been used with my own children.”

Summing Up Adventures In Parenting

Katy Lee’s Adventures in Parenting blog is a very hands-on, real-world approach to raising content children who become functional, contributing, “good” adults. Check out all that Katy Lee has to offer (including not only her blog, but podcasts and newsletters as well), and gain an ally in the fight to maintain a happy, healthy parent, child, and family relationship.

Where to Find Freakedout Fathers:

Freakedout Fathers

There really is no shortage of parenting advice or websites, albeit at varying levels of usefulness and authority. It’s probably fair to say that a great many of those are weighted more toward the female side of living with children than the male. And so it is good that there are excellent, real-life blogs and websites out there to help men navigate their own unique way around the spectrum that is life with children and family. Peter Aldin‘s Freakedout Fathers is one such place.

Freakedout Fathers – Why You Should Go

Freakedout Fathers is the work of the aforementioned Peter Aldin, Australian personal and professional coach with an emphasis on communication—which one might think is ideal for life with children, unless you have ever lived life with children. Peter is the first to admit that professional preparedness does not equal preparedness for parenthood. For that, you need more—you need understanding, comrades, and experience. Yes, that means that you might be destined to make a few mistakes and live in a cloud of doubt from time to time, but then, that’s what Peter and his blog community are here for—to give men a place to connect and commiserate and learn from the trials and experiences of each other.

Peter’s blog has the dual advantage of knowledge and experience. Peter and his blog are here to raise the issues of parenting from the male perspective, to offer resources and advice, and to help you work though them in a down-to-earth and oft humorous way through education and identification.

Summing Up Freakedout Fathers

Freakedout Fathers is an obvious choice for a Dad, but there is a lot here of value for Mothers and others, too. First off, (if the men can forgive the female intrusion) there is a lot that women can learn here about just what goes through the minds of a father, at a level of understanding not often seen that can really help couples and parents come to terms with each other’s opinions and actions. Secondly, a lot of what men go through women experience, too, particularly in these modern days where issues of work and family are shared and not solely the domain of men anymore. Not to paint the place pink, as we know Peter has his own opinions about over-feminising the male space, but this is a blog of real value for anyone facing the challenges of child-rearing; a blog with great potential to more than the audience it is intended for, with the potential to also help bridge the divide of misunderstanding between mothers and fathers.

What I See Out My Window

The name of the blog almost says it all. What I See Out My Window is the blog space that Anthony has created for people to share their views of the world. It is what Anthony sees out his Canton, Ohio, USA window, and what his readers and contributors see from windows all around the globe.

What I See Out My Window – Why You Should Go

Anthony’s blog is a very original type of photoblog. Anthony has set a stage where people can share a part of their lives. That part may be one you take for granted more often than not, but also one that in its simplicity communicates a lot about who you are and where you are from. This simple, unique blogging concept helps us all gain a better view of life all over the world, sharing and admiring the places we call home.

Anthony’s blog has but a few rules. Anyone can contribute a photo from their home or office or vacation window (but not a vehicle window). To have your photo posted, simply use the contact information on the blog and submit your photo with a few lines of explanation to Anthony, and he’ll take it from there. You may even find yourself coming up a winner in a monthly poll.

Summing Up What I See Out My Window

Anthony’s blog concept is simple, original, and ingenious. With an open forum and a few snapshots, Anthony is helping people experience life through the eyes of others, and opening up vistas of the small and intimate places of the world.

Recap Reviews, January 24 Edition

Amazingly, another week is done.  Less surprisingly is that we’ve found some more great blogs out there over a range of topics and interests.  Let’s have a look at our most recent additions to Do You Digg It blog reviews.

Week In Review, January 24, 2009

  • We began the week with vacation on the mind.  The Uptake Vacations blog proved to be an excellent resource for all things vacation.  Along with its companion travel-related blogs, this site covers all the basics of travel, vacationing, recreation, and lodging.
  • Staying with our theme of travel, we took a look at the Ecotravel News blog.  This blog presents all the best news from the world of ecotravel, helping us all become cleaner, greener, world adventurers and businessmen and women on the move.
  • Personal financial management being top on the minds of all people these days, Thursday’s review took us to Mint.com, home of noted (free) personal financial tools and a blog full of excellent finance and money advice.
  • Our final review of the week paved the way to a whole new look at health.  Healthbolt is a health-news and resource blog that isn’t afraid of any topic.  It’s not your Mama’s health blog, but it’s one to wake up to!

That sums up our week here at Digg.  We hit many of the top concerns and interests to bloggers and readers today, and we’ll continue to do so in the coming week.  Come back and join us for a whole new week of blogs and reviews–you never know where we’ll show up next! (Do remember, however, if you have a suggestion–tell us where to go!  Leave a comment to tell us where the good blogs are, or request a review of your own work.)

Healthbolt is, as you might have guessed it, a blog about health; but it’s not just “another” blog about health, and, as author Liz likes to say, “It ain’t your Mama’s health blog.”

Healthbolt – Why You Should Go

Healthbolt is a blog on the b5 Media network that brings you all manner of information and news from the world of health. There are your more run-of-the-mill health posts with tips and advice for things like fitness and weight loss, but then there are those health topics that many health bloggers dare not talk about—some turned into features like Sexbolt Saturday and The Sunday Sidebar (now a Monday morning feature). The categories list is absolutely bursting with interesting health topics, many you probably haven’t given much thought to before. This health blog covers every aspect of health in the news, not shying away from any given topic. From the general to the “interesting, weird, and intriguing,” Healthbolt delivers the goods for a whole picture of health.
