A couple of weeks back we talked about the good that can be done by letting us get to know you–by taking advantage of your profile page (or creating one) so that readers and newcomers can see at a glance who you are and what you are all about. It’s important to have these resources because quite frankly, most of the time you only have a few minutes to grab our attention and convince us to stay and to keep coming back.
It appears that one of the top reasons bloggers don’t do this (besides the fact that we underestimate its importance) is that often bloggers want to remain anonymous–their blog is a place to vent or to speak without fear of personal impact or impact upon the lives of others in your life. There are some very good reasons to do this; nevertheless, you can still let people know what you are about without letting them know who you are.
Getting Personal, Anonymously
People seem to connect with bloggers’ personalities more than they do with actual names. Faces are nice, but that’s a decision left up to you if you are trying to remain personally anonymous. But you can put that personality out there on your about pages without revealing those details that you care not to disclose. You can still use those pages to the benefit of your blog and your readers. Bloggers do it all the time. For example, they choose descriptive screen names, they tell about themselves and their lives and interests, they make up pseudonyms and initials for people whose names they’d rather not reveal.
You can choose to be an anonymous blogger and still get personal with your audience. Tell us the what and the why even if you’d really not reveal the who, and we’ll still be happy to come back and get to know the best parts of you and what your blog has to offer.
