Digital Immersions

Stephen Frink, author of Digital Immersions, has many credits to his name. He is Director of Photography for Scuba Diving magazine, a published author, and one of the most frequently published underwater photographers. He also runs his own self-named School of Underwater Digital Imaging, a work that serves largely as the base of his blog. With a resume like that, (and that’s just the beginning) it’s hard to imagine him having time to blog, too. But he does, and his craft is our gift at his Digital Immersions blog.

Digital Immersions - Why You Should Go

The resume sort of clears up this question, but to be more specific, Stephen’s blog is first and foremost a place of education. He uses it in many ways as an extension of his imaging school as a way to reach out to a larger audience and share his tips and techniques with a more far-reaching crowd. If you’ve any interest in underwater photography, this is a blog for you.

That aside, this is a place to go even if you have no interest in ever snapping a single pic of the underwater world. As mentioned, Stephen is a true professional, and the blog is worth going back time and again just to enjoy the sites. The images Stephen captures are nothing short of amazing, and something few of us will ever have the fortune to experience.

Summing Up Digital Immersions

Stephen’s blog is worth your time, for all the reasons mentioned here. Go for the facts or go for the fun, but prepare to be entertained either way as you see things from this diver’s eye view.

Real Words On The Street

The Policeman’s Blog

People have all manner of opinions regarding the police and their work; many of these will depend on which side of the law you find yourself on, or your exposure to them. There will always be those who disdain anyone related to “coppers” (as the author affectionately refers to himself), and those with nothing but the utmost respect for law enforcement. And then there are those who maintain an ounce of fear related to the power the police wield, despite their respect for them. Before you make your conclusions, though, it might help to get to know a bit about the real life of the police on the streets.

The Policeman’s Blog - Why You Should Go

A very simple reason to go is that this blog provides a look into the field of police work in a way no assumption could do justice. The blog offers a unique look into the life of real, live police officers in the UK and Canada. It also shares insights from around the world as the author frequently imparts interesting tidbits and comparisons with his colleagues.

Adding a healthy dose of entertainment to the mix, the blog is written with humor and some [understandable] cynicism, as witnessed in the introduction to the blog.

“A Journey into the mad, mad world of the British underclass and the public sector, where nothing is too insane for it to be written down and copied in triplicate. VIEWS EXPRESSED PROBABLY DON’T REFLECT OFFICIAL POLICY. “This blog will do more to put people off calling the police than anything, other than actually calling the police” (PC David Copperfield.) This blog is written by and accepts submissions from serving and former police officers and concerned MOPs.”

Summing Up The Policeman’s Blog

The Policeman’s Blog is a rare opportunity to see life through the eyes of the men and women on the streets. Love them or hate them, law enforcement serves a very high function in all of our societies, and they deserve to at least have their voices heard, or read.

Focusing On Ability

Ability Focus

Ability Focus comes to us from Sky, whom we’ve reviewed before for her work on the Everyday Heroes blog. Ability Focus is another of her works, one dedicated to opening people’s minds to the potential and capabilities of people with mental disabilities, be they the result of mental retardation, brain injury, or mental illness.

Ability Focus - Why You Should Go

Sky writes Ability Focus with care and attention, showing that the key to helping people with disabilities is to work within their capabilities, and not focusing on their abilities. Sky speaks with authority on the subject as one who has worked for nearly 12 years with the population as a direct care provider for the mentally disabled.

In explaining the intent of her blog, Sky says that her goal for the blog is to most specifically be a resource for the people who work with people with disabilities, to offer them a more effective and meaningful experience. She cites her experiences as her resource; “Along the way I have had the privilege of learning how to better relate to folks with and without ‘disabilities’. On this blog I intend to share some tips and tricks of people working in this field to help enhance the quality of life of persons with ‘mental disabilities’.”

While her intent may be more care-focused, there is much for everyone to learn from Sky, as her posts regarding effective communication, appreciation, and management are applicable many times over to life relationships. The blog is also a great way for people to learn more about the population at large, and to gain a higher level of understanding and appreciation of people with mental disabilities.

Summing Up Ability Focus

Sky’s still young blog shows a lot of promise, and proves to be a very good potential resource for people working closely with people with mental disabilities. Sky has many years of experience and appreciation of the gifts working with this population brings, a true wealth of information to draw from for her blog.

Change Therapy

Change Therapy is the blogging work of a real psychotherapist, Isabella Mori of Vancouver. Her blog is focused much as her practice is on helping people change for the better and build better lives. On her practice page she tells us, “I’m here to assist you in creating a good life. Through conversations, we’ll figure out what works for you and what doesn’t, and we’ll find and implement solutions that will bring you more direction, clarity and joy” which she does in an insightful way.

Change Therapy - Why You Should Go

Isabella’s way is to use her vast experience and knowledge of her field to approach the many recurring themes that she sees in her practice. In addition, she approaches topics that are important to her and that she feels are important to share. Included in the regular categories are topics ranging from eating disorders, religion and spirituality, depression, and chronic pain. Posts also include common difficulties faced by clients including a lack of clarity, joy, and direction, and also guest posts from readers she has helped. To be sure, the potential for readers to identify with the topics approached is great.

Summing Up Change Therapy

Some readers are surprised to see that a professional counselor would maintain a blog, but the fact that Isabella does is a credit to her. Blogs like this expand access to good information in some very important subject areas, and also to help readers see that no one is alone. Exposure like that is sure to go a long way towards helping people get help, and towards helping people overcome their own difficulties.

Darren Rowse ProBloggerWhere to Find ProBlogger:

ProBlogger

ProBlogger is just one blog maintained by Darren Rowse, a fast-risen star of the blogworld. Darren is known to many as one of the co-founders of the popular b5Media Network, where he is also the VP of Blogger Training. But before b5 (and still today), Darren was a blogger—a professional blogger, and one who has an abundance of knowledge to share.

ProBlogger - Why You Should Go

Darren describes this particular blog as being “‚Ķdedicated to helping other bloggers learn the skills of blogging, share their own experiences and promote the blogging medium.” In a nutshell, that is what the blog is. It is an opportunity for bloggers of all shapes and sizes to learn from a professional making six figures a year as a professional blogger. From newbies to veteran bloggers, anyone can go to Darren to learn the ins and outs of successful blogging and monetizing (making money!) from your blog.

Darren’s sage professional advice deserves your attention regardless of the intentions of your blogging and your goals for it. If yours is a personal blog, interest for which you wish to gain more attention and readers, or a steady calling you’d like to make a go of as an income source, the blog tips (really, strategy and expertise) that Darren offers is what you need to meet those goals. He’s also shared his blogging wisdom in a book he co-authored with the equally upstanding Chris Garrett, ProBlogger, Secrets for Blogging Your Way to a Six-Figure Income.

Summing Up ProBlogger

Not all professionals are as quick to reveal the secrets of their success; so when you find a guy like Darren Rowse who is, you should definitely take advantage of his generosity. Darren isn’t someone talking about how it could maybe be done, he’s telling you how it is and has been done. He is a preeminent leader of the blogosphere, dedicated to watching it grow and taking a firm hand to be sure that it does.

This is a great time to visit ProBlogger, too; Darren and wife just welcomed their second son on June 15th - Father’s Day for many of us, but not for Darren in Australia (although he says he’s happy to celebrate this one, while giving all due credit to his wife for her efforts!). Darren will be taking paternity leave for the next couple of weeks, but has lined up a list of guest bloggers and revived some of his best posts to keep things interesting. This could be a great opportunity to see who the pro’s follow, rely on, and respect.

Rob' MegaphoneWhere to Find Rob’s Megaphone:
Blog URL: http://robertstevenson.wordpress.com/
Category: Writing, Comedy

Rob’s Megaphone

Rob’s Megaphone is Rob Stevenson’s place to let his voice be heard‚Äîboth his expert writing voice and the voice of his comedic, slightly skewed sense of humor. The goal of his blog, courtesy of Rob’s About page, is two-fold in nature; his mission is:

1. to post about writing - specifically trying to make learning about grammar and writing fun, and
2. to post funny, interesting stuff.

If he can pull the first off that is quite an accomplishment. But his posts tagged funny prove that the second has been definitely achieved, which can only mean he’s off running to accomplish goal number one.

Rob’s Megaphone - Why You Should Go

Better writing skills and a better command of the English language is something that everyone (writing in English, of course) could use from time to time. With the proliferation of social media and the WWW in general, writing skills are taking on a new level of importance, which only means that blogs that help us communicate better are taking on more importance.

That being said, I have to say (as one who writes herself), that the best reason to visit Rob’s Megaphone is the funny stuff he comes up with. Really, it’s hard to imagine where one would find with all this stuff. One of the Megaphone staples is the silly news, some of which is just plain odd and entertaining, and some of which is just plain scary when it gets down to it. Nevertheless, there are plenty of laughs to be had.

Summing Up Rob’s Megaphone

Rob Stevenson, who by profession is a Mass Communications professor and writer (so one can only hope he’ll go easy on the critique here), really does seem to know his stuff‚Äîboth the writing “stuff” and the funny stuff, too. Go see Rob for your regularly scheduled English writing and grammar lesson, or to have a few laughs. You won’t be sorry you did.
