About.com Web Logs

We do tend to venture from time to time to the periphery of blog reviews and into blog resources for bloggers. One popular resource that comes to mind is from a very well-known network, the About.com self-help topic and information website. About has been in the business of providing reliable information pages on a variety of topics for years, extending that list to include weblogs just a couple of years ago.

About.com Weblogs – Why You Should Go

About.com Weblogs is a comprehensive guide to blogging. The site is now maintained by Susan Gunelius, who comes to the job with a resume complete with corporate and blogging experience, as well as experience as a published writer.

About.com Web Logs has been designed as a “go-to” resource for blogging. It has a wide range of related articles, from how to get started to how to utilize individual resources and features of software and programs. In addition, there are links to many outside resources and related articles on topics of interest to bloggers. Articles and advice can be found through one of three basic categories:

Speak Out!

It’s been a while since I’ve dedicated a post to submission requests, and no time being like the present, it seems high time for a reminder.

What Do You Digg?

Digg was developed (by our own Sean Rasmussen) as a dedicated blog review site, with the idea being that we would wander the Internet in search for good blogs deserving of review, but also with the intention of inviting bloggers and blog fans in to submit blogs for possible review.  Every now and again we like to remind our readers of that fact, because we don’t want you to think this is all about us–this is a blog built with a community focus, and we more than welcome your comments and suggestions.  We also know that there is no way our small editorial group can get to all those excellent blogs, and so we rely on the outreach of others, too.

You can always submit a blog for review.  It’s very simple to do, just leave a comment on this or any Digg It post with a link to the blog, and we’ll do the rest!  You can even submit anonymously if you like.

Blogs, Directories, Communities, And More

What can you submit?  Most anything that is appropriate for a general audience (we’re G-rated, no adult content, please).  That could be a blog, or even just a blog topic if you want us to do a little digging in a particular subject area.  It could also be a suggested blog community, directory, or other related resource (as long as it makes sense for bloggers and blog readers).  It can be your blog, a friend’s blog, or a totally random blog that you stumbled upon and just like.

We keep pretty open minds around here–all we are looking for is blogs and related sites with value that may be of value to readers, too.  Join the fun, speak up, and let us know what’s still out there to review!

Rose DesRochers – World Outside My Window

Rose DesRochers is addicted to writing. That works out well for her, given her affinity for blogging and writing, or perhaps it is her addiction that is the benefit to her projects and her blog. In any case, Rose’s addiction is our gain, as this blog is her outlet, a little bit of everything all wrapped up in one blog.

Rose DesRochers World Outside My Window – Why You Should Go

Rose’s blog is just one of her online outlets, the others being the forum and community that she has built for other bloggers and writers, both excellent resources for learning and support. Her blog she describes as a collection of posts on

“…a variety of topics including odd news, technology, internet safety, child exploitation, blogging, and life in general…”

Here she writes about current events, daily life, and controversial subjects that pique her interest. Obviously the blog is a bit of a mix, which is a nice distraction from many of our blog reviews where the subject is ultra-focused; it’s a little bit of everything, a surprise every visit, and a great place to think and learn, and even find some great pointers for avoiding spammy con-artists.

Summing Up Rose DesRochers – World Outside My Window

Rose has lots if interests and lots to say on everything from environmental initiatives to creative writing. Stop in and see what you might share as a common interest, and join in the community that Rose has been building these past two years and more.

Blog With Success!

Blogging With Success

Bloggers have an uncanny knack for coming up with names for their blogs that are so pointedly indicative of what they do, don’t they? In a world where people judge your worth in a matter of seconds, that’s a good thing. This blog is yet another example of a blog name that “says it all”; Blogging With Success is a blogging guide designed to help you start, manage, and take your blog to the highest possible levels, to see the best return on your blogging effort.

Blogging With Success – Why You Should Go

Blogging With Success is a fairly young blog, having been created in November of 2008, but it is very quickly proving its worth for bloggers (new or old). It is a blog full of tips, tricks, tutorials, and advice on every aspect of blogging, from design and promotion to connecting with the real-live people who read your blog. This is a team effort, currently with four bloggers contributing within their individual areas of blogging expertise and experience. This approach makes for a very well-rounded advice and tutorial blog, and offers insight for bloggers at all stages of the game, as the contributing writers are also all at different stages of blog growth. What’s even better is that the writing team hails from points around the globe (India, Indonesia, the USA, and the Philippines), so is representative of the true global nature of the blogosphere and the people participating in it.

“As a team of writers from various disciplines, we complement each other, providing greater coverage of blogging issues. Each contributor is in a different stage of their own blog’s life cycle. Located around the globe, they represent a cross-section of our readership.”

The blog is also a highly interactive place, very much in favor of action and participation, as noted on the About page and in the calls to action for comments and participation on the posts.

“Your time here will be well spent if you participate and contribute on more than a surface level. It’s a two way street. Get what you need from this blog and in return contribute so that others in the community can benefit from your success. We don’t want you ‘lurking’ around in some Google Reader. Ask your questions and share your skills right here in the city square.”

Summing Up Blogging With Success

Blogging With Success is a very well-designed blog in both form and function. New and “hot-topic” posts are easy to find with shortened versions and easy buttons for “more” and “comments” below each, so you can quickly click through to just the posts you are interested in. The diversity of the writers, their experiences, and their targeted, useful posts makes this blogging resource one that delivers more than most, putting real blogging tools in your hands, and then helping you learn how to use them. All in all, Blogging With Success delivers the goods and makes sure you know how to use them. This is a promising new blog packed full with great information already, with lots left to come.

Recap Reviews, February 7 Edition

The first week in February found some great blogs, and brought some excellent submission suggestions out of the woodwork!  Thank you to all of those who submitted a blog link for review, and please–keep them coming!  Tell your blogging friends!

Week In Review, February 7, 2009

As is the custom (at least I’m making it one), here’s a link to last week’s review in case you missed those great blogs: Week in Review, January 31, 2009.

Now, on to the latest and greatest….

  • Continuing a bit on the parenting theme that rose to the forefront last week, we had an excellent suggestion from one of our readers to review Dad’s Adventure.  This is the blog of American Greg Bishop, the creator of the well-known Boot Camp for New Dads.  There is a lot of excellent parenting advice, targetted primarily to men, but good for all, and a wealth of resources here for expecting and new Dads and parents of young children.
  • Our next review also came to us through a reader.  We were glad to be introduced to Lee Potts’ Breaking Murphy’s Law, a blog written by an expert in public presentation matters, designed to help you buck the odds and succeed wildly through education and preparation.
  • A third reader suggestion took us back to the motherland, to a blog offered for the purposes of supporting and connecting mothers to mothers.  It’s an always-on job, and one we’re glad to see 24/7 Moms helping out with.
  • For our last blog of the week, we took a walk on the tech side.  zMogo brought us their zMogo Tech Stuff blog, an information-packed blog and forum filled with additional resources and posts in gaming, SEO and web, design, gear and gadgets, and much more.

That wraps our week.  Hope you’ll all join us back here for another great week of blogs and reviews.  This week I had the good fortune of receiving some excellent blog suggestions; in fact, every blog reviewed this week came through reader submission.  All suggestions are greatly appreciated, and all you have to do is leave a comment below (or on any blog post at Digg It).

Where Are The Best Blogging Communities

I would think (hope) that there will be lots of answers to this question.

Across the internet and blogosphere, it seems there are some networks and platforms that are much more than what they appear; but sometimes you only get to know about these if you are a member of the platform or community itself. That stands to reason, because really how can you be a part of a community without being an active participant in it in some way—either as a frequent visitor or fellow blogger?

Community Magnets

Community MagnetsNevertheless, it seems some places tend to create more of a community than others. The more time I spend looking around Blogger blogs, the more I think that Blogger is one of those spaces. There is always a web weaving from one blog to another (a web that often provides me with many of the subsequent blogs for review). The more I review, the more I find these links looping back upon each other—and no, not always from their original spots. In fact, I’m surprised at the frequency of coming back to a blog weeks after the fact from a seemingly unrelated blog.

Sometimes it is the network that really builds that sense of community across interests—b5 media comes to mind once again. Of course, the best bloggers are masters at this, since community really is what blogs are all about.

It does seem, though, for whatever reason, that some places build communities more easily than others. Who knows why that may be (although if you have an idea—do share!). Being that blogging is as much about the people as the topic, it’s an interesting subject to explore. It’s also a great idea to share those places that do attract a sense of community. I’d very much like to hear where you find the best blog-related communities to be.

What Do You Think?

Comment below, and tell us, where are the best blog communities on the web (platform, network, or singular blog—anything goes!)?

Lest We Forget…Thanks And Gratitude

For Americans, this is a week all about giving thanks (Thanksgiving being celebrated today, November 27, for those of you who do not know). It’s a time when we all look back, remember our roots, and give thanks for all that we have, and all that came to pass to provide that to us. In all honesty, it’s something we should all be doing every day…living a life of gratitude and thanks.

In The Spirit Of Thanksgiving

Giving ThanksIn this spirit I, too, would like to show my thanks; my thanks to Sean Rasmussen for creating this blog and inviting me in to contribute to it, and my thanks for each and every reader who comes and adds to it. So many of you have done that in so many ways, and continue to do so with your ongoing presence, comments, and suggestions.

In that spirit, I would also like to take the opportunity to remind you all that we are always looking for ways to give back to all of you—to show our thanks in our own way. One of the ways we do that is by encouraging an open dialogue; another is by inviting you to share with us the opportunity to pay it back to you in the form of blog reviews.

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, this blog is our contribution to the blogosphere. But it does no good without great blogs to review! And so we invite you once again to remind us of the many fine blogs we may be missing (hey, it’s a big internet out there!). Please take this time and our thanks and leave a link to all the deserving blogs you know and love—and that includes yours! No need to be shy, you should be proud of your efforts and blogging achievements, and we’d like nothing better than to show that we appreciate your time and interest by allowing us to repay the favor!

To all of you and yours, no matter where in the world you may be today, a very Happy Thanksgiving.

Eye On DNA

Ever since the DNA code was unraveled the building block of life has been on the forefront of news and discoveries. It seems every day there is more to know and new applications and implications that stem from our new-found knowledge of DNA. It’s all very exciting, but also confusing for the average person.

Enter Dr. Hsien-Hsien Lei. Her blog, Eye on DNA, is dedicated to decoding this exciting field and walking you through just how all the applications—large and small—may come to bear on your life.

Eye On DNA – Why You Should Go

The subject is a passion of Dr. Lei, who is backed with all the credentials and credits to be a true authority on it. She brings this authority to her blog, where it has been married with another passion of hers—blogging and social media (you can read about her extensive social media credits on her About page, too). She describes her passions and her blog in this way:

“I’m passionate about social media and the potential it has to empower people to take charge of their personal health. The Internet and genome technology combined are going to change our lives in ways we can’t even begin to imagine. Medicine in the genome era will touch all of our lives and I’m here to document its progress.
DNA is our past, present, and future. We need to seize it, examine it, and know its power to make it work for us. How will it change your life?”

Summing Up Eye On DNA

DNA discoveries and knowledge will change your life in many ways, ways in which you’ve previously not even been aware. Learn more about the forms those changes may take, and learn how you can use them to take more control over your future and health, courtesy of Dr. Hsien-Hsien Lei.
