Cooking…The Way It Should Be

Cooking By The Seat Of My Pants

The name of this blog drew me in the first time I saw it. What does that mean—Cooking by the seat of my pants? Basically, it means cooking the way I think most of us do, if not at first, eventually…just like blogger Jerry Russell did.

Cooking By The Seat Of My Pants – Why You Should Go

We’ve covered a lot of cooking and food blogs here at Digg It, but none of them quite like this one. Most of the blogs that we’ve covered, as most cooking blogs are, have been either blogs of professional cooks and chefs or blogs by everyday cooks who do things very much by the book. Not so with Jerry’s blog.

Jerry Russell is, as he says, “cooking by the seat of his pants.” Which simply means he’s tossed aside the cookbooks, the rules, the ‘must-do’s’ and ‘can’t do’s’ and has made cooking an adventure, mixing and matching and creating new combinations and fly-by-the-seat recipes as he goes. The results are usually mouth- and eye-watering, but as Jerry (a web-designer and pro blogger by technical profession) says, sometimes the results are only “so-so” and sometimes down-right disastrous; but every experience is a learning experience, and it all makes for good blogging, either for the food and taste value, the room-for-improvement value, or just the laughs at Jerry’s expense.

“Cooking by the Seat of My pants is more than just a really catchy name for a food blog. (Well, I think it’s pretty catchy.) It’s the way I cook. I rarely use a recipe, and if I do, I blatantly neglect to follow it once I get going. I just fly through the kitchen by the seat of my pants and cook for the sheer unadulterated pleasure it gives me…

…Cooking should be fun. It should be an adventure, and the best part of that adventure is sharing. Since I can’t invite the whole world for supper, and because I have no interest at all in returning to the world of the professional cook, this is my way of sharing.”

Summing Up Cooking By The Seat Of My Pants

Jerry Russell has taken a much less structured approach to his cooking, and one that feels much more ‘normal’ than many elite cooking blogs. His is more like cooking for those of us in the real world, all the while being also something of a permission slip to let yourself go, experiment, and enjoy your food and make it fun.

Go here to check out Cooking By The Seat Of My Pants.

*By the way—Jerry’s wife, currently serving in the U.S. Air Force, has recently been deployed overseas. He shares these challenges as well in his personal stories. Our respect and gratitude to Jerry, his wife, and family for their service and sacrifice.

Adventures In Food & Cooking

What’s Cooking

Food is more than just sustenance, it’s an adventure! If you don’t believe that, then you haven’t met Ben Herrera of What’s Cooking.

What’s Cooking – Why You Should Go

Ben Herrera loves to play with his food—and we love his results! He describes himself as a ‘Kitchen Adventurer’ who loves to experiment with both preparing great recipes and photographing them. It’s a love of food that he has inherited from his restauranteering family, and one he is working hard to parley into a career in food photography. That should be no trouble for Ben, either, given the quality of his amazing food photographs on his blog.

The blog itself is a dual-natured blog. Ben takes and posts those amazing food photographs, and then also shares a bit of background, story, and of course, great recipes to tell the tale. The result is an absolutely tantalizing blog that will have you running to your cabinets to see how close you can come to Ben and his creations—whether you are a fan of cooking or not.

As if all of this were not enough, the blog doesn’t even stop there. Ben has built an inviting community through his blog, and also maintains a forum at the site for food and photography talk, and also relatable topics of health and fitness.

Summing Up What’s Cooking

Ben Herrera’s blog delivers a lot more than you might expect from a food blog. From good food to great friends, this is a blog community that has it all.

A Delicious Life Balance

Carrots ‘N’ Cake

Carrots ‘N’ Cake is a blog with something of a dual personality. It all balances out in the end, though, in the most deliciously enjoyable way.

Carrots ‘N’ Cake – Why You Should Go

Blogger Tina believes that there is a definite balance to life that allows you to enjoy it to its fullest. Her blog is proof of that. Topping off her philosophy is her love of food, but also her commitment to living well and healthfully. Tina has worked throughout both her personal and professional life to achieve a life of balance and enjoyment, without the need to feel either depravity or major guilt. Her blog is very much an effort to help you do the same as she leads by her good example.

A great portion of the blog is devoted to great food and recipes (with pictures!). Along with it, there is also a wealth of information about exercise, fitness, weight loss, and more (including some excellent reviews). Her simple approach to living well and her blog inspiration is this:

“I love food, and I love eating! While I try to fill my diet with mostly healthy foods, I have a number of favorites that are not necessarily nutritious, but are still delicious and fun to eat. If eaten in moderation, I believe that the “bad” foods can be part of an overall healthy diet. This food philosophy is the inspiration for Carrots ‘N’ Cake.

I allow myself to indulge almost everyday, so my goal is always to find a healthy balance. By posting what I eat everyday, I hope others will gain some insight into how to incorporate good nutrition and the occasional splurge into their diets.”

Summing Up Carrots ‘N’ Cake

Tina is leading us by example to a life that is enjoyable and maintainable. Through balance Tina has found, and shares, a workable lifestyle that is not built on a house of cards of depravation.

Savor These Cooking Videos!

Where to Find Savory TV:

Savory TV

What if we told you that there was a blog that could help you to eat each and every day like you would in a fine restaurant? Right from the comfort of your own home? Well, there is. Yes, you have to do the rewarding dirty work (unless you have someone else in the house to pass it onto), but the reward is more that worth the effort when you learn to create your own fine fare! (And if you’re cooking anyway, why shouldn’t it be great?)

Savory TV – Why You Should Go

At Savory TV, they’re taking all the best cooking videos from real, live chefs on the web, sorting through them and bringing them to you. They are also creating a few of their own for something completely unique. What is delivered in the blog posts are the videos, the recipes, and a discussion to explain and help you along. You get the complete package for cooking up restaurant dishes all for the low price of…one blog visit!

But does all this make sense? Can’t you just search YouTube yourself and do all this? Yes and no. If you have nothing else to do but to weed through the riff-raff, sure. If you want the whole package (the commentary, the deciphered recipe, etc.) you’ll need to come here anyway, so why not start at the end? As if this weren’t enough, Savory TV also delivers unique articles with advice from top chefs on topics like how to save money in the kitchen.

“You may wonder, with so many cooking video sites online, why another?

“Simple. Because Savory Tv weeds out and delivers only the best chef recipe videos. Sorting the gems from the debris out there can be quite the task, especially when your time and grocery money are at stake. We also try whenever possible to include the recipe (with due credit) or a link to the recipe in the post, to further save your time. If the video is lacking a written recipe, we break it down and write it for you.”

Summing Up Savory TV

Savory TV has put it all together so you can learn from the best and enjoy the best possible meals at home, affordably. Their format makes learning easy and fun, giving you both a written reference and a video format so you can learn by watching. You won’t go hungry when you follow this blog!

A Thyme For Everything

Thyme For Cooking

It’s been a while since we’ve reviewed a food and cooking blog, which is primarily what drew me to Thyme For Cooking when first I came across it. What drew me in, well, that was something different.

Thyme For Cooking – Why You Should Go

From the name, you might expect Thyme for Cooking to be an online recipe book of sorts; and if that is what you go looking for you will not be disappointed in the least. Not only does the blog offer up a new mouth-watering recipe by the day—complete with pictures—but it also comes complete with a parent website of the same name dedicated to healthy, delicious, easy daily menu planning.

However, the real surprise of the blog is the one-two punch that it packs. It is written by Katherine Lerum Zeller, an expat who has spent the last 10 years abroad in Ireland, Andorra, and now France, collecting as many stories as she has recipes—possibly more. Each post is preceded by an amusing and entertaining story, which ends, quite naturally, with the dish of the day.

Summing Up Thyme For Cooking

Katherine’s blog delivers everything you’d expect to find and so much more. Come share your love of food, cooking, and good story-telling with Katherine as she moves around the world and collects more food for thought.

Cooking With Anne

Food is one of life’s simplest pleasures. But enjoying good food seems so hard sometimes, doesn’t it? Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a place where you could chat with a friendly face, enjoy the passion of another, and learn once and for all how to prepare and enjoy good food easier? Wouldn’t you love your own personal guide to the realistic culinary life?

Lucky for you (and for me) there is such a place, right here on the world wide web. That place? Cooking With Anne.

Cooking With Anne – Why You Should Go

Anne is our guide to the livable culinary world at her blog, Cooking With Anne. She is a stay-at-home-mom with a serious need for good, healthy food‚Äîshe’s got 7 mouths to feed and keep happy! That can’t be an easy task, but somehow Anne does it with flair and style. She offers mouth-watering posts that span the exotic to the everyday, including recipes for such treats as Fried Squash Blossoms (who knew?) and Strawberry Milkshake Popsicles.

Anne really loves what she does and it shows. She treats us to photos and tales from her garden as she teaches us how to enjoy foods from all over the world, and also locally-grown fair that’s fresh and green.

We found Anne here at Cooking with Anne, but there are other places to find her, too. She is also a writer for Disney at Short Order Mom, and keeps interested readers up to date with the more personal side of her life at The Rest of Me (incidentally, Anne and her family have gone through some serious trauma in the past year; you’ll find her blog even more impressive and inspiring when you learn more about her and find out just how impressive her cooking and blogging talents are when weighed against the rest of her life!).

Summing Up Cooking With Anne

Enjoying good, fresh food should not be something that only haughty, arrogant Chefs from Hell should enjoy. Great food is something everyone should know, and Anne makes it possible for the regular guy or girl to do that. She teaches as she expands our culinary horizons, and does much of the work for us as she explores and experiments, and then reports back with the best of what she finds.
